Mustek Scanner - Design Flaw (20th Oct 14 at 2:13am UTC)Quote Reply
The scanning of art is temporarily delayed. The large bed Mustek scanners have an inherent design flaw. The scanning wand has a tab that extends downward. In the home or starting position, the tab sits above the circuit board and between a field goal shaped component on the board. This tells the board that the wand has returned to the starting position. As the scanning wand moves the length of the glass, a ribbon cable is carried and extends to it's full length. The ribbon cable over time starts developing kinks in it. Not unlike the phone cord on a phone when you pick it up repeatedly. The twists in the ribbon cable cause it to get in front of the tab on the scanning wand as it return to the home position. The problem is that the tab drags the ribbon cable off to the side and prevents the scanning wand from returning to the home position. The motor keeps turning. The cable gets pinched. Software errors follow and the scanner won't work anymore. This has been an issue for over a year.

On the positive side, the scanner is VERY easy to take apart. Two screws hold the top on. I can unscrew those and the front is held by two oval shaped posts that slide in and out very easily. There are no complicated clips that are subject to breakage. In that regards, unpinching the cable is extremely easy.

On the negative side, the problem gets worse the more the scanner is used and there is no easy fix. The more the cable gets pinched, the more prone it is to get pinched. The more it extends, the more prone the cable is to twist to the side. It's at a point now where it gets pinched on every single large scan.

I'm not giving up on it. My next attempt to fix it will involve trying to weight the cable down so it falls before it has a chance to twist. Whether that works or not... I don't know. The cable should be in it's own track or roll up as it extends and returns. I'm thinking I should complain to the manufacturer.

The scanner is working again, but it's definitely not a professional repair. I cut up little pieces of a tie wrap and taped them across the width of the ribbon at an angle in places to give it rigidity and stop it from twisting. That helped, but it wasn't enough. Now I have the cable fished through a paper clip with a binder clip attached to the paper clip and a rubber band giving a slight tension on the cable & binder clip assembly to help pull the ribbon cable away from the tab on the scanning wand. It's interesting, but it's working and the cable hasn't been pinched since making this modification.
