The checklist is updated to version 11.60 .

Added gallery pages for for Cartoon Carnival.

I still have many covers to process. Removed my image for #90 until more research is done. GCD has a different cover scan for this image with the correct date on the cover for the month it would have been published. They show the image I had for #90 (no year, no indicia) posted as being #108. That appears to be wrong since the month on the cover does not correspond with the month that #108 would have been published. After reviewing the galleries further, I believe the unnumbered issue to be #104. Neither of us have images posted for #104 and the month fits in with the timeline on the series for that year.
The posting of the galley pages was rushed. I had inconsistent size formats on my magazine scans. I try to post the comic-sized covers with images 400 pixels in height. I try to show magazines with images 450 pixels in height. During the creation of the gallery pages I discovered that some of the magazine images were saved at 400 pixels in height. For now, I have them proportionally stretched. I have to go back and review whether I can create resized magazine images 450 pixels in height since stretching them reduces image quality.

The checklist is updated to version 11.56.

http://charltoncomics.herobo.com/Charlton_index.html

I added a scan for Billy the Kid #30 (UK Version)
That was the last unprocessed image that I had for the letter "B".
I'm missing 9 images on the list I have compiled.

4 of them are missing Canadian price variants. I suspect 1 may not exist.
4 of them are UK (Pence) variants. I suspect more may exist.
1 is an adult humor comic.

Only rare stuff is missing.

Re: Charlton Checklist (16th Mar 19 at 3:43am UTC)

I'm trying something different on these scans.

Image

Image

I did my touch-ups to remove stains. I darkened them a little to make the blacks look less faded.
Then I saved them as jp2 files. The reasoning is that jp2 files should have better compression than jpg files.
The compression "should" be eliminating certain blues and colors that make it harder for the eye to focus.
Then I saved them back as either png files or jpg files. My thinking is that going that extra step to save them as jp2 should or might be helping the images have a crisper or snappier look. To me, the differences are subtle, but I believe they do look better.

Here is last missing (known) pence variant on my checklist! Thanks to GM&I for all the scan contributions! Smiley

The only scan that shows on my checklist as missing is a Canadian variant for the last issue. It falls withing the possible date range to exist, but they might not have bothered since it was the last issue.

Discovered that Humbug magazine was distributed by Charlton. That led me to more information I had already heard about Charlton's distribution.

That's interesting. Good spot Def

Not sure if you know, but there are some pence variants of the Charlton Horror magazines. Take a look here if you get time:

https://www.cgccomics.com/boards/topic/430349-doctor-tom-brent-and-his-flying-nurses/?do=findComment&comment=10612159

There are four unique UK only covers of a title called 'Monsters' which appear to be remaindered copies of 'Mad Monsters' / 'Horror Monsters' with new covers added. Quite rare apparently.

Also, there are US versions of the 10 issue run 'Mad Monsters' / 'Horror Monsters' titles which have what look like hand applied UK cover price stamps on them. I'm still researching them and will report back if I find anything else out. You might want to add them to the checklists?

I've got some images of American comics with pence ink stamps and I've decided not to list those. If they are altered versions of the American version (stamps or stickers), I'm not listing them. I might post the images here, but anybody can buy a stamp or have similar stickers made. It's the same reason I don't list signed comics that have only a certificate of authenticity (as well as a signature) to differentiate them. I list the ones I am listing because they were printed without the 12¢ price on them. That's a true price variant in my opinion.

Disclaimer: This response below has a lot of speculation that pulls info from obscure, but known info.

The comics with new or replaced covers are interesting. In researching comics distributed through shoe stores, it appears that that practice or behavior started with trying to recoup money on comics either returned (unsold at the retail level) or remaindered (unsold interiors at the publisher). The early shoe store comics involved putting a generic shoe store cover over interiors from different publishers. I just posted such an example yesterday in my EC category. It's a "Comics From Weather-Bird" cover over an MD #3 (EC) comic on the inside. The same cover can be found on many Harvey comic interiors.

I need to go back and locate your earlier posts about the "RV" brand. My first thought (whether right or wrong) upon seeing the brand was "Revista". "Revista" is Spanish word that translates to "Magazine" in English according to Google translate. "Revista" is sometimes on the brand logo of one Mexican publisher. I believe that both "Editora Sol" and "La Prensa" both reprinted Charlton content for Mexico and other Spanish language countries. There's strange situation where an American publisher "Export Newspaper Service, Inc." printed Spanish language EC comics in the early to mid-1950's for the Mexican market. The printing stopped at some point in the U.S. and all operations were shifted to Mexico. "Export Newspaper Service, Inc." printed EC's "Valor" title with EC content until issue#5. The title continued in Mexico well past EC's demise in the U.S. Issues #6 through at least #20 were published using the "Valor" title, but all evidence indicates that the interiors were Charlton stories.

I'm thinking it's possible that a Mexican publisher was using the Charlton content that they'd gotten from the U.S. and publishing an English language version for the European market. If the U.S. can publish comics for the Mexican market, I think it's entirely possible that a Mexican publisher could "double-dip" and sell magazines in the UK market or English speaking countries across the world. It's known that some publishers were distributing comics in both the UK and Australia.

There was also a very strange relationship between EC & Charlton. Charlton did the first printing of EC's Impact #1. Bill Gaines was so dissatisfied with the printing quality that he order it recalled and destroyed. It has a white logo. I own one. The second printing was published by someone else and it has a yellow logo. Maybe the comics branded as "Export Newspaper Service, Inc." were published by Charlton for EC so they could extend their market to other countries. They would have popped up around the time Superior Comics in Canada bowed to censorship pressures and quit publishing EC content in Canada. Somewhere on the board is a scan of a comic I own with a Valor #2 cover over a pre-code Charlton comic interior. No one can define how long or how many issues that Charlton published for EC.

The text I posted above showing that Humbug was distributed by Capital Distribution (CDC) further deepens the mystery. Humbug was published by Harvey Kurtzman after he left EC's Mad series.

If you aren't familiar with the Connecticut Historical Society's Charlton Timeline, it sets some of changes and challenges into better perspective. Charlton expanded their printing facility in 1953. They bought/absorbed a lot of the competition in 1954 and finished out a lot of the stories that had been in the pipeline to publish at the other companies. The Charlton facility was severely damaged in 1955 due to a hurricane.

There were a lot of financial expense going on in the 50's for everyone at a time when the market was collapsing. The late 50's to early 60's could have seen La Prensa or Editora Sol exploiting partnerships that Charlton made out of desperation. Those "RV" branded comics could have been Mexican comics. That is one long-shot theory I entertained. I think Mexican published comics were also distributed in Spain and South America. If so, they were already shipping comics to Europe.

Thanks for that info Def - very interesting. I'll explore the links later. I understand about not including US priced books with UK stamps - I follow the same rule in my CGC pence threads (I hate it when people call US priced Marvels with UK Thorpe & Porter price stamps 'UK Editions'). Some of the Horror mags in the link I provided seem to have printed prices though. Most are clearly hand applied, but some seem printed. I'll let you know my further thoughts once I've found and checked some additional copies.

Here's a link to a blog with the four remaindered unique UK covered 'Monsters' magazines:

I had already followed the links and grabbed the scans. I haven't decided whether to add them yet. I'm on the fence until I know more about them. I probably will add them because I'm already listing things like "Best Cartoon Series" which is only branded with the CDC distribution symbol.

I have one or two more issues of Cartoon Carnival to process, and that leaves me 12 or 13 images short on a complete gallery. I had to settle for some lower quality images, but I made them as presentable as possible.
If you'd told me that I'd be that close at this point, I would not have believed it. Collectors online have really stepped up to gather images for the reference sites.

Re: Charlton Checklist (4th May 19 at 3:13am UTC)
The checklist is up to version 11.89.
There was a version 11.88 that never got uploaded.

Started processing UK scans for Timmy the Timid Ghost and the updates would have been version 11.88.
A delay occurred and I decided to get back to what I'd been working on. I start processing UK version of Li'l Genius.

That's the same title... right? Of course it's not. I went back to the wrong title.

Regardless, I processed some of both titles.

I'm one issue away from processing all the UK cover images I have for Li'l Genius. It looks like I'll be missing confirmed issues 32(UK), 35(UK), 41(UK), & 42(UK). That will leave 37(UK), 38(UK), 40(UK), 43(UK), 45(UK), & 46(UK) as unconfirmed.

I added an image for Li'l Genius #37 (15¢ Price Variant)

Li'l Genius#'s 54 & 55 are now listed as "54 (Direct), 54 (Newsstand), 55 (Direct - 1/86), 55 (Newsstand)"

All the late 1985 and early 1986 issues will be expanded to list the newsstand and direct versions. The existence of two versions is a relatively new discovery for me... within the past year or so.

Purged Photobucket links.
Added newsstand & direct versions that were missing.
Unless you go through Lonestar or Mile High Comics, these are pretty tough to find. They were low print run even before it was revealed that Newsstand & Direct Market versions existed.
Larger images can be viewed if you click on the cover images on the page.

The Charlton Checklist is up to version 11.94.

Added all the known Kid Montana pence issues to the checklist & gallery pages.
Purged all the Kid Montana photobucket images from the main checklist and page 1 of the gallery pages. Still need to purge the photobucket images from page 2. It's a tedious process.
