Excellent link!
It'll take some time to wrap my brain around all of that info.

Thanks!

No real questions. I've just got to incorporate it into the list I have.
I like the pence variants, but I'm not actually collecting Charlton Comics.
I miss the presence of non-superhero comics being available.
Charlton is a company that I appreciate for sentimental reasons.

Much of my list is compiled from very poor quality scans online.
My guess is that the pence comics are hand stamped which is why the price location varies.
My image for the "no price" issue of Atomic Mouse came from a low resolution image.
Your scan is much better and shows that a sticker was applied.
Again though, my theory is that all or most are originally printed without the pence price.

This one is an oddity to me. It appears to be gold ink stamped at the bottom as possibly a department store give-away comic.

I believe so. The link doesn't work for me because of the configuration and the quirks with the message board, but I used the words in the link to find the page. I searched on it a few years ago and found the same info. As part of my checklist, I've been trying to collect all the scans that to complete the Blue Bird shoe store give-away comics.

http://charltoncomics.herobo.com/Charlton_Blue_Bird_Checklist.html
I've only completed the set for one store brand and one title. It involved working with some very poor quality scans.
http://charltoncomics.herobo.com/Blue_Bird_Comics/Masked_Raider/Blue_Bird_Schiffs_Masked_Raider.html

A few years ago I fueled a collector frenzy for those trying to collect the obscure Charlton Digests. This is a list of The Charlton Digests as well as other publishers who printed some of the same content. They were evidently sold through schools. I assume it was some kind of catalog or book fair program. It may or may not have involved fund raising.
http://charltoncomics.herobo.com/Xerox_Comic_Digests.html

One misconception is that people believe Modern Comics was an imprint of Charlton. Evidence does not support that. Modern Publications was a separate publisher that reprinted or rebound comics from various publishers including Marvel Comics. They also published Children's books. The links don't work, but here is a list of their stuff.

At some point, L. Miller appears to have started publishing Charlton content...

And of course those Australian versions...

Yes, Miller were principally in the reprint game. So few people are aware they distributed first printing US originals too. It's why I'm glad to see a site like this {Smile}

Most people think information like this magically appears online and don't realize the hours of effort someone spent collecting it. It's really quite amazing that if you collect information like this into one bucket, it can actually create a collecting community where there was none before. A large number of people aren't going to collect Australian Charlton reprints because they don't know what exists. If a checklist is posted online, more people know what to look for. They start searching and buying. I started collecting scans on Charlton adult humor titles and prices increased by about 5 times what they had been.

Indeed. I've spent thousands of hours compiling my stuff so I know how you feel. Fortunately, I enjoy it and once in a while a kindred spirit shows up, just as you're on the cusp of giving up sharing, with a kind word to keep you going. I'm still waiting for the Charlton Pence price explosion though. That can hold off until I've got them all {Grin}

I'm glad your site exists. The fact that someone else cares about Charlton pence copies is quite reassuring. It proves there's at least one other nutter in the world {Wink}

Compiling a list of Charlton comics has been a huge undertaking. I probably won't finish in my lifetime, but I keep plugging away. Finding that one comic that no one knew existed is always fun. I get to stay connected to the history of the hobby without spending a lot of money. I am collecting any Charlton adult humor comics I find locally. The free hosts waste a lot of my time. My Brides in Love page was looking good, but the image host changed all of the image links after I created it. Now, none are working. There's nothing on their site that says you can't use the images on a web page.

I started out creating checklists for dead superhero universes. I moved on to EC comics and stopped chronologically when Mad Magazine began. I expanded that to list all of the domestic and foreign reprints. Except for some limited leatherbound hardcovers, I feel as though I'm up to date about what I know exists. Whenever I move onto a new company, I always discover some unusual oddities that few collectors know about. There lies my temptation to buy something.

The common stuff doesn't interest me as much as the obscure or less known items. Once a full gallery of pence comics exists online, I am sure the prices will increase. Same with the Canadian price variants.

That's why I do it - it keeps you in the hobby, is relatively inexpensive and it appeals to my variant instincts. Like you, I find the regular stuff less interesting and I love finding new things. I know you have your own interests but if you ever have time, check out the 'about me' tab on my CGC profile page. It shows links to quite a few threads which champion the little known variations of our four coloured friends. Good talking to you Defiant1 {Cool}

Get Marwood & I,,

Do you have Gorgo #15? I didn't see a scan in your CGC thread, but here is a copy...

Hello Def, yes thanks I do. I have 1-15 so far. Number 16 should exist, but he's an elusive one if he does. I forget what I have and haven't posted on the CGC boards now. I'll have to revisit at some point....

I'm going to be offline for a while now Defiant1. I have an eye op to sort which the NHS has been threatening to perform for a while now. So if you post, and I don't reply, I'm not ignoring you. I just can't see! {Cool}

Will be back at some point and will sort out the posting of all the other pence Charltons I have, but have yet to post, so you can snaffle a picture for the checklist. Have fun {Smile}

That's fine. Most of my members just stop in to see if I'm still alive. Smiley Image Smiley Smiley Smiley

I was hoping I had pointed you to a comic that would fill a hole in your collection. I sorted through every comic book store's web site that was listed in Google for England, Scotland & Ireland to find that one pence cover. It was one I need though, so it was a nice find.

I just posted a thread on the Billy the Kid pence variants. I was looking at the months on the cover to see if there was some pattern. I had a theory that "maybe" only the summer months had pence variants. Kids are out of school and comics theoretically sell better in the summer months. My theory was wrong. There is no pattern to the release dates from what I can tell.

My research shows that all Charltons should exist between Jan 1961 and December 1963 inclusive. So BTK should have 18 issues (26-43). I've not identified any of the date gaps that exist for other publishers (Marvel, DC etc)

If I'm right, there will be 833 pence Charltons. I have proof of 448 so far, and own 385. It's a fun hunt {Cool}

I prefer rare or scarce over common any day of the year.
I've stared at the same silver age keys 10,000 times. There are some I want, but I'm really tired of seeing the same artwork over and over. I've seen them ad nauseum. Mosrt of the stuff I collect are not seen as often.

Charlton adult humor titles.
Pre-hero Marvel monster comics. My main focus is Tales to Astonish.
Treasury/Oversized comics.
Distributor limited Trade Paperbacks (Diamond or Capital City rebound their excess comic stock and made TPB's that the publisher never sold)
Obscure indy variants.
I am interested in some of the short lived Charlton series from the 50's (Nature Boy, Blue Beetle)
I would buy any Canadian price variant on Charlton if I saw them.
I want a set of the Charlton digest sized comics. I've never seen a good scan of Flintstones Book of Laughs.
I definitely understand why these are interesting to you. It's also like putting together a puzzle.

The old image was fine, but I changed my naming structure after originally posting it, so I processed it by mistake and it looked better.
