Cyberrad Volume 3 #2 sticker on cover (27th Feb 16 at 2:15pm UTC)Quote Reply
Have we ever discussed why there is a sticker on the cover of Cyberrad Vol. 3 #2? It's one of the little black circles, the one in the lower right corner of the book. Out of curiousity, I peeled the sticker off to see if there is anything underneath of interest:

Code:

  1. [URL=http://s89.photobucket.com/user/Brother_J_Valiants/media/001_4.jpg.html][IMG]http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k235/Brother_J_Valiants/001_4.jpg[/IMG][/URL]

This is a weird one, the image underneath is almost exactly the same, other than the color is slightly darker on the image underneath. Seems like a pretty arbitrary reason to attach a sticker to a cover.

Obviously, the purpose of any gimmick is to help increase sales by making the comic stand out. I suspect that the cover art is the same so that it could be reused for newsstand sales or second printings if desired. Does the sticker peel off easily? Can it be reapplied to something else? "Hey kids, stick this on your notebooks when you go to school?"

I don't know. I never was a fan of the gimmicks. Some can be "value added" or improve the quality of a book. In many cases that is not the case.

I didn't know if it was supposed to be a gimmick, I thought maybe it was like the Acclaim issue of Eternal Warriors that had a price sticker correcting the printed price, which was wrong. I thought maybe there was some kind of error on the printed cover, which they fixed by applying a sticker.

No, it did not peel off easily, though I did manage to get it off without damaging the comic underneath.

Almost every comic that Continuity released in 1993/4 had a gimmick. I think it was added by initial design and not a correction. Maybe some day I'll find the solicitations. I think the gimmicks help draw attention, but not when every issue has one and every publisher is doing it.

Maybe run a blow dryer over it and it changes color....

There's a bit in the video where RobLiefeld talks about the early 90s cover gimmicks at the 1:25:00 minute mark up there. I never knew Bloodstrike #1 had thermal ink. Makes me want to dig it out and test it.

Smiley Dammit! You suckered me in and got me hooked on that! Smiley I was wise enough to jump to the correct portion you referenced, but then I kept listening! It was an interesting piece, but I did break away before my evening was consumed.

He's interesting to hear talk about the industry. The beginning is mostly Deadpool talk and then Alan Moore on his later Extreme books.

He has a funny ToddMcFarlane imitation in one of the sections. I liked his eye roll reaction when he heard Bloodshot/Valiant being mentioned.

I really did have something to do, so I was multitasking when Bloodshot was mentioned. I didn't pay attention to his reaction. It was interesting hearing him talk about the egos involved. I'm going to try and watch the whole thing. I've always said that what Rob Liefeld lacks in talent is made up for with enthusiasm. I was buying some of his books when he wasn't drawing them.

He's pretty entertaining in the interviews. I was listening to this 2 part (4 hour!) podcast with him and he unloads alot of back story from all the companies. It's amazing how Jim Lee's success can be linked to alot of Rob Liefeld business rejections. Business proposals that went to Rob first and Lee picks it up for him and just became bigger in the industry. It's a lengthy podcast but i'm hearing it in sections:

I find these podcasts riveting....

I'll have to download that and put it on a flash drive so I can listen while driving. I won't do it now.
