My understanding is that it would be the same script redrawn by Joe James, but that is just speculation.

Here is the original script with Ditko listed as the artist:

Here is the solicitation:

Yes. I have a date of June of '94 associated with it, so I assume that was the intended release month.

Do you know if the solicitation was published in an issue of PREVIEWS?

Yes., according to information contributed to me about 13 years ago. It was solicited in 1994. My first guess would be the March issue because of the 6/94 date, but I'd check the 6/94 Previews just in case. It was solicited sometime between 2/94 & 6/94. I Have not located all of my Previews copies, so I can't give more detail.

All the info on this page was supplied by a contributor.

I didn't know about the Dark Dominion #0 comic being released in comic book form back then.

The biggest and oldest mystery to me is the Chasm #0 eight pager. That was the one #0 issue promoted the earliest and yet it's the one that's the most hidden. I said it before but when I got my first Dark Dominion #0 binder back during the Defiant monthly collecting days of 1994, I mailed in for the Chasm zero issue and my envelope was returned back to me unopened with a red stamp on top that said something I can't remember. Smiley Smiley I think it said "unclaimed?"

I wish I could help with pics of the old Previews solicits but most of my runs got wet during the storm. Smiley

I thought we'd discussed Dark Dominion #0 being redrawn. The only thing I forgot was that it was going to be limited. By that time, sales were dropping and 10,000 would probably not have been ordered, Speculation was dead by late 1994. My goal when I got back into collecting was to buy more comics and less magazines about comics. I regretted buying price guides and magazines about comics when I got back into collecting in the 90's. I wished I had spent the money on comics instead because the comics increased in value and the publications about comics did not.

That one key september month would have made a difference with the amount of product they were offering in keeping them going. The book trade collections of the zero issues, Schism and the tie-ins. Maybe it would have got them a few more months to survive to winter. Trade paperbacks now seem to be more profitable that the monthlies. I'm not sure how well they sold back then.

I used to spend alot on comic based magazines and also Tomart action figure magazines as well. Now they are just heavy inside boxes.

I think DEFIANT bailed too early. Jim stories were still brewing. His stuff is best when the stray pieces start getting woven together organically. The monthly comics pay for the art. The sales from the TPB are gravy. The art was already bought, so it's like publishing a book where the content to produce it was all free.

I think price guides bugged me the most. I'd buy one every year just to see a comic go up a dollar or be listed so low that the guide was useless.

I wondered if the friction between River Group & Defiant started with the Dark Dominion #0 card binder release since there wasn't a comic version produced or any movement made on the Chasm #0 eight pager. I remember the prices for the box card sets were too much for me back then in '94. I just wanted the comics, not the complicated card set up with the Level 1,2,3 chase cards. {Rolleyes}

The mention by Polgardy of the Joe James DD #0 in regular comic book form is news to me. Would have been great to see that happen. I thought that one was going to be in the trade paperback. Maybe Ditko didn't want his version of DD #0 reprinted?

I see American Mythology has Casper comic books which is owned by ClassicMedia/Dreamworks. The Defiant & Broadway properties are silently collecting dust in there.... {Embarassed}

I know there were several things at play. River Group was upset with DEFIANT not supplying the art fast enough. Sales were dropping on both the books and the cards. I'm sure that it was expensive producing that much artwork for the cards and the comics. If sales aren't meeting expectations, it's hard to get a return on investment. Jim was spending money freely on marketing with videos and technology.

I think Dark Dominion #0 with the extras would have been like "Home For the Holidays". I think it's would've been a small TPB reprinting one comic with extras. That is just a guess of course. Steve Ditko made it clear that he wanted nothing to do with Dark Dominion once he discovered what it is. In all honesty, it seems to be based upon him. My guess is that he felt the same way and felt it was mocking him. Jim probably was having the comic redrawn out of respect for Steve. You don't want a cornerstone of your publishing to create hostility between them and a comics legend. He was battling enough negative press at the time. He didn't need Steve jumping on the bandwagon too. He was already unjustly being criticized over his treatment of Kirby. Having people say that Kirby & Ditko both had a problem with him would've been a one/two punch to his reputation anyway.

I don't think Starbrand would be getting so much high level assistance on his fanzine if something wasn't up. I could see American Entertainment testing the waters on a superhero universe. If so, this may be the last chance DEFIANT has.
