Here again was a very kind gift from Vikingspawn.

Splatterball #nn (No Foil)
Image

This is an oddity. I'd only heard of one copy existing prior to Vikingspawn posting an image.
Splatterball was a comic released with the Plasm card binder. The first edition binders has a copy of Splatterball with a foil treatment on the cover which indicated it was the Premire Edition". The 2nd edition binder sets have a foil treatment indicating it is the "Second Edition". The third edition binder sets did not come with the comic at all. So this version without foil should not exist. Yet it does. Thanks Vikingspawn!

More stuff to scan.

I keep thinking that maybe these exist because one was caught behind another Splatterball copy while it was being stamped with those foils seals after printing. Since these are thinner and maybe a few were caught behind the other and then slipped inside the binders without the packers noticing.....like eating M&Ms and you find one is grouped and melted into another...one theory i'm speculating for this oddity... Smiley Smiley

I think these are rarer than plasm stand alones and prudence #2 spanish...

Now I wish i could have asked about the Chasm #0 mail-away comic at the con...doh!... {Embarassed} Smiley

Chasm #0 was never produced.Art Holcomb claimed to have the script if I recall correctly.

Your guess makes sense on Splatterball. It would also be a good marketing ploy to do that on purpose. Hmmm!

I'm bumping this, as I have one on the way. I'll likely post a scan of it this weekend, unless it's so high grade I don't feel like handling it. If that's the case I'll post that info and then post a scan of it when I get it back from CGC, as I may submit it to them if it's high grade.

It does appear that way. I believe it's an error comic, unlike the Plasm Stand-Alone, but it could be printer samples.

I picked up two of the Splatterball non foils in that Defiant rareties I scored recently. They both appear to be so high grade I wouldn't even handle them. I just prepared them to ship to CGC, which I should be doing soon. I'll probably ask an awful lot for them on eBay. If no one buys them I will just continue to ask a lot for them.

I first learned about it from a collector in... I think... Illinois. He had a near complete DEFIANT collection. He wanted it on my checklist. I've never looked to see who else knows about it.

I remember CorvetteJim had too. I might have a couple left. One I got his signature signed on or maybe it was both. {Grin} I'm thinking of ideas on how to better organize my stash since I can't remember what I have with my stuff is spread out. I need to rebag and group some runs better. Maybe I should make a custom box. Re-bagging and boarding keeps me calm for some reason...

Side note....I see recalled comics profiled the nintendo sneak preview:

The same guy who had two of the non foil Splatterballs also had Warriors of Plasm printer's proofs. That's circumstantial evidence the non foils are tests by the printer.

I misread you post above. You were talking about the art. Interesting, but he'd be the one to ask. Some people just make the connection to get stuff. Your theory is possible.

I saw that Recalled Comics says it is unknown whether the Bloodshot Platinum is a printer's proof or a test run. Also they have the estimate number of copies of that book at 11-100. I think that might be similar to the non foil Splatterball comic.

Based on the number that have surfaced, that may be true. If it's an error copy and people haven't been keen enough to notice, there could be more.
I would not rule out the possibility of the Bloodshot Platinum book being made intentionally. Valiant could have made the equivalent of a chase card. There are reports of one gold book having a pink box variant. We know X-O Manowar has Cream & White box versions. There are glossy & non-glossy Rai #0 covers. Valiant was shameless in their attempts to market their books. The flat X-O Golds might have been intentional. The Harbinger #1 2-staple/3-staple variants could have started it all. I find it peculiar that Valiant had all these "error" comics and other publishers from that time period don't. Either they have the worst luck in the world, or someone was playing games with the collectors.

I think that Valiant secretly printed "chase" comics much as a card set will have chase cards. I think Bloodshot #0 platinum was intentional. I think Splatterball #0 without foil is an error comic or a test printing. It will never have the demand of a Bloodshot comic.

Shouldn't we be judging the Pink Bloodshot #0 as the rarest Valiant comic?

I agree this will never have the demand of a Valiant. I also wouldn't be surprised if Valiant did stuff like print chase comics on purpose. I don't know anything about the pink Bloodshot. There's a pink X-O that's not overly rare.

Not a pink logo like the X-O. Its more like the Platinum Bloodshot, but the little box at the top left is Pink.

I think they get some of their listing info from my site either directly or indirectly. Most people don't know this book exists. I found out from a collector in the midwest years ago. I think it was an Indiana collector. Yeah, that's fine. I see they don't have a scan for it.

The two Splatterball no foil variants that I scored was in a batch of stuff that I believe had to originate from a former DEFIANT employee. In that batch was a Plasm 0 one-staple variant and a bunch of Warriors of Plasm printer proofs with handwritten editorial notes on them. I'm not sure proofs like those have ever been seen before by the general public.
This makes me think the Splatterball no foil may have been some sort of limited run given out to employees or run off by the printer and snagged by an employee... or something along those lines.

Very probable. I added it to the checklist because they were showing up everywhere. First notified by a Midwestern collector. Our South Florida board member had one. You were aware of it. I have no idea how many exist, but there are some Continuity Comic issues that show up online less than this comic.

Nope, and I'm not going to look.

What I'm saying is that in the last decade, the subject of this book's existence has been conveyed to me from various disconnected sources and there are other comics in the past decade that I've only seen referenced from single sources.

I don't know how many exist. It may truly be the rarest DEFIANT comic. If it is as rare as you believe and it was only known to exist as a DEFIANT office samples, I would remove it from the checklist. I would just leave it referenced as a footnote somewhere on the site.

The site is created mainly as a checklist for items that were solicited and released to the public in some manner that can be documented. There would have to be something truly noteworthy for me to add something that was a one-of-a-kind or 10-of-a-kind production sample to a collector checklist.

The only reason the comic is listed on the checklist is because from a statistical perspective, the samples of evidence implies that there are more than 10 or 20 copies.

The website is an attempt to encourage people to collect DEFIANT Comics, not suck up to Joe James or Chris Claremont to get a comic that only they would have.

Yes, that's it. It looks like it sold for that price, but I double checked since the seller was accepting best offers on it.
If you enter the item number on a search at watchcount.com and then click on history, it shows it sold for the price I stated. Took me awhile to figure all that out.

I need to check it out. You've mentioned it before. It's very misleading to consumers who think the item sold for $60 more than it actually did. They are essentially lying to the consumers.

Ebay is not working properly for me. I'll click something and it does nothing. Then I click to stop and refresh or just refresh and it loads the link I was trying to get to.

I had two slabbed. I got a 9.6 and a 9.4. I sold the pair for $375 to different buyers. I couldn't afford to hold onto them, as it came at a time I really needed money.
I got $125 for the 9.4 and $250 for the 9.6. Those prices seem low in view of what this raw copy sold for. I helped set the market for it. I had to fight like a mad man with CGC down to the end to get them to denote it as the no seal variant on the label. As an aside, I also got CGC to denote Dark Dominion 7 as the first JG Jones pro work on the label of the copy I submitted. Those books are now in their system as such, and any future copies encapsulated by them will be denoted in the same way.

That sounds pretty good. At least saleswise you made some high money.

I didn't know there was a back and forth thing to make CGC notate labels besides signatures and 1st appearances. Sounds like they gave you a hard time at first with this one. Explaining to them that this book is without that foil over the others. And it being an independent comic. I wonder how well they know about theses Shooter universes of books. Instead of the endless valiant vaiants.

I wouldn't have had the info on this book that I had without this board.

Did you keep pictures of your slabbed books? I was curious to see how they looked like.

Powers That Be #2 B&W ashcan would be fun to slab since it has the different art cover.

I bet nobody has done that one. Unless there's a data base to check.

I didn't think to keep pictures. I'm a member of CGC, so I have access to the census. The only Powers That Be is a #1 in 9.6.
I have a few Powers That Be set aside for slabbing. I'm not sure I'll ever get to them.

This no foil variant sold today for $250. After I got my two copies slabbed by CGC and they properly labeled them, this book has really solidified in price.

Welcome back Jim. I thought you sold off all of your stuff. Your input is definitely welcome, but I think the board will be dying in the near future. The host is always busy with other things and there seems to be some problems with the server or the server configuration. I get a lot of errors when trying to load pages.

Jim sold his regular Defiant comics to me. I recently sold him a run of everything back.
