Wrong!
It's pre-Bongo!
I would value that to be worth more like $1500.
I wouldn't sell it for a dime less. Pretty cool item.

The rabbit in the Life In Hell strips is named Bongo. {Grin} {Wink} That mag paved the way for all the others. Smiley

I've never seen that cover before. The first 1993 Bongo ashcan recently sold over $1000. This Life In Hell one is historical. The appraiser didn't know anything about comics and she valued it too low.

I value it at $1500 based on the fact people don't know it exists. I could see it go for multiples of that if people knew about it. I was a little annoyed that she was using magnets to affix it to her display board. I find myself disagreeing with appraisals on that show a lot.

Re: Bongo Comics (31st Mar 17 at 2:47am UTC)
After 24 years of publishing, bongo has gone to the toilet on print. They've cancelled all their longtime books in the last year and going straight to digital now for iTunes and their app stores. The price per digital issue is half the price of their printed comics. How are they going to make money when digital can be gotten for free? Things went downhill ever since editor bill Morrison left the line. At least it will save me money Since that was the main line I would stick with for years. Only spongebob comics, a licensed book from nickleodeon is keeping them around for print. The classic groening universe of books? Shitty uncollectable Digital! Smiley

It's really amazing that they've lasted this long. They should have gotten Groening to create more characters. Was there ever a Life in Hell comic?

Re: Bongo Comics (31st Mar 17 at 5:33am UTC)
They havent made a regular life in hell comic book except for those white oversized bookstore books that collected the old strips. And then the yearly calendars that still come out. But the rare original early '80s life in hell fanzines he made....those are treasures! I wish I had those.

Groening always goes to San Diegocomicon to sign bongo books so I want to know what he's thinking about those cancellations of them. I thought he was the main one keeping them alive for the sake of having comics.

Last I read, he was working on a new animated series for Netflix based on eras of rock and roll music or something. Which will probably take a couple years to animate and come out.

The best was futurama and they just canned that series in february after 17 years. Smiley.

The reruns still play in hour blocks on Comedy Central every day.

It's just weird because IDW stil produces that kind of genre all the time with no problem. Even American myth is has their own lineup with crazy multiple variants.

The groening stuff is a much bigger franchise than the others left out there. Digital exclusive content blows without print.

When you hear people talking about their cartoon publications, it's usually bait to get kids to buy comics. I think the publishers want to convert them to teen or adult comics as they get older. I don't think anyone creating new content would make money in this genre. The Pink Panther comic I bought was 50% reprint material.

Hola, Sergio! Lol. Nice sketch. Even better that he signed it without personalizing it with someone's name which I see a lot of. He's in wondercon now. I was actually looking if someone might have video'd his panel was on YouTube yet.

I don't mind things being personalized because I don't chase signatures with the intent to ever sell them. I prefer that they not be personalized, but the acquisition of a signature is more of a reminder than I met the person.

I like signed comics when I go to convention but not when my friends send me signed comics with my name on the cover with quotations on it. To me I look at it and it ruins it. I prefer just the creator's name on a cover.

Here's some of what Sergio says about digital:

https://www.bleedingcool.com/2017/04/01/sergio-aragones-does-not-like-digital-comics-the-mark-and-sergio-panel-at-wondercon-2017/

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The panel was also asked their feeling about ebooks. Sergio said, “It screws me up so badly, economically, because everybody who is doing it has taken the copyright rights of every artist and wiped their asses with it. They steal everything, because when someone does it they say it’s already there. There’s no logic in there approaches of anything. When they bought the rights to put out the ebooks of comics, they went to Marvel and DC and they offered a dollar per comic. They say a dollar per comic, we have 20 million comics out, yeah sure. They make a lot of money. They come to me, and say Sergio we want to buy your Groo for ebooks. How much will you pay for it? A dollar a copy. I only have 120 copies, which means they want the rights to my comics for only $120.”

Somehow I must have missed this post.

I empathize with creators, but they don't understand that technology has devalued creative works. Anybody can copy and anybody can share. The limitations that once enabled a creator to say "my work is unique" no longer exists. Air can only be sold when it's held in a container. If you open your container and mix it with the rest of the air, you've given it away and there is no way to call it yours. Publishing something in a magazine and then saying "I want it back" is bullshit. I'm not going to rent music or rent a piece of art. I'm not buying anything with strings attached. That is bullshit too. I'm not a creator's puppet simply because I like their artwork. It's not stealing. They gave it away or they gave it away and took compensation in return. Either way, when the air is out of the canister, you don't own it anymore.

Yea, he really hates digital. I don't know if he knows but a small chunk of his Marvel stuff is already available on the dark horse digital site. Not all but 15 percent of his Marvel Groo run from the trade paperback collections dark horse released in the later years. I wonder if his stance on digital is what's holding up the re-collection of the early Marvel Groo that hasn't been released again. I heard he makes dimes on royalties off of the trade collections and hardcovers so far. I'm curious to see what the numbers really are for digital. It's like netflix and their secret viewership numbers, they don't release the units sold for digital comics either. Bongo went all digital now and cancelled pretty much everything but one title. That method can't really be a hit for them over actual print collectors like me. Smiley

I think the Simpsons will be going the path of "I love Lucy" & "Gilligan's Island". It's had a good run, but I just can't see it lasting much longer... either the comics or the TV show.

This is gonna be good. Kind of epic. Smart move on MAD's end. Maybe they'll make the magazine a monthly from bi-monthly. And fresher covers that feature other topics than Trump every issue.

I think it can only be good for both. It's like taking a noose off someone to be able to expand to more projects other than the Simpsons.

I was so lucky with this one. The few i've seen pop up are usually yellowed or brown with age. Some are signed and numbered. I think this one might have been one of the last fanzines he released for Life In hell. And then he went with the collected book editions (Life/Work/Love is Hell) for the bookstores in the late 80s after Tracy Ullman discovered him for her tv show. There's no real gallery on the net to highlight his old fanzines though. Any old unknown ones I see i'll grab scans for their old covers.

Yea! These rare ones are fun! Now you can see what the old grails look like:

So far....

This is a pic set I found from last year (whoever the lucky buyer was last year scored these...)

Image

Image

I'm guessing he made the regular Life In Hell regular numbered fanzines since 1977 and then later on he made the "Bonus Holiday" issues seperate:

Image

Image

Image

In one of the fanzine issues, Groening printed a letter Danny Elfman wrote in and included it in his letter columns:

Image

So they were friends since back then during his Oingo Boingo days. Pretty cool. Elfman later became the monster music composer he is today.

And a strip from one of the issues:

Image

These really rock. I still can't believe I scored one. I think the sizes of the old old ones might be bigger. The one I got is about the size of those small mini Vinyl records because the seller shipped it to me in a record baggie. I'm glad whoever had it all these years thought to store it in one...

Holy cow you're fast! lol

Yea, I don't know what to call them. Forget when I say fanzines. I just use fanzine as my search engine whenever I search for them thinking they're hidden in piles by sellers. The seller who sent it to me referred to it as "Sunday funnies" maybe he was thinking they were inserts in magazines or music newspapers? Maybe they were back then. I'm thinking the seller scored this one hiding between vintage records he bought for his store. I might check out my old vinyl store for the heck of it.

There are signed and numbered versions Groening gave out to friends like in some of these pics and in that old PBS Antiques video show link up there.

It sounds perverted. Nah! It is perverted.

Is that an early acting role for Peter Dinklage? It looks like him to me.

Good article. I never saw it before. It mentions Groening worked at a Xerox place early on making it easier for him to print his own stuff at the time. I see some issues he would staple in different places on each book.

I used to remember some Oingo songs but the only one my brain remembers now is for Weird Science. This video looks like it influenced "Beetlejuice" with the warped doors and walls. That does look like Peter Dinklage. I really want to see that HBO movie he's making based on Herve Villachaize from Fantasy Island and his later years.

http://www.thewrap.com/hbo-peter-dinklage-herve-villechaize/

That'll be a good one. I remember hearing he used to be a drinker and a womanizer with hot models of the time. lol. And that he could drink his own weight in liquor. I don't know how Dinklage will be able to mimic the voice though. That'll be tough.

I found a clearer pic of bonus holiday issue 5:

Image

Little less blurry than the other one I linked. The other old issues have been tough to find images for. So far i've seen at least 6 numbered Life In Hells early zines and 5-6 for the Holiday versions. There's no real chronology/gallery anywhere on the net.

What is this?

Image

Is it a cartoon or a comic?
By the title at the top and the drawn leaflets of paper on the edge, I'm guessing it's a cartoon.

This is an ad I downloaded. It might've been included with the article. I don't remember.

Woah! Treasure! I've never seen that! That must be another one of his other side ones too....by the $5 cover price it might be more of his collection of Hell strips and more pages in there. Wonder if by "magazine" it includes his other artists friends in there. From what i've seen on the inside of my copy it's mostly a collection of his cartoon strips, letter column sections....and some more things stuffed into it to fill it out. Alot of those photo pictures of actual people on the covers up there, those are really pictures of Groening himself younger and of his family. In one of the issues, he photo copied his old driver's license from the early 80s and put it as the intro of the inside cover.

I'm looking into it some more, but I think this is just a postcard or a cartoon and not an actual magazine.

Here's a picture in all B&W.

I haven't scoured this page yet.

Yea, that might be a parody page and then reprinted as a postcard with the name/logos added in red on top.

Here's one magazine parody cover I found for "Miffed" printed in one of the issues:

I have one postcard and remember some strips were reprinted and his name in red was added on top.

Sorry to get your hopes up.
I wish I could read the text on those other self-published comics.

Any obscure art item you see is still worth mentioning. I wish there were more visible covers as well. Zooming in on the smaller scans just makes the small texts look blurrier.

The lack of pictures of his early stuff years makes these feel even more underground than ever. Buried and hidden....

They were probably not treated as real collectibles. Many were probably discarded after they were read. I first saw his cartoons in a publication called "Creative Loafing". I read countless "Life in Hell" cartoons and just threw the magazine away.

Here's another i've never seen. The seller posted this up briefly and then took it down. I guess he realized it's rarity and wanted to keep it. But I still was able to grab the pics.

I like how Groening uses a yellow highlighter over the logo on this cover:

After a year of announcing they were going "digital exclusive only" on future Bongo comics, they're actually releasing Krusty #1 onto print after all:

Only took them a year but at least they're coming. Now for the others....

Whenever I'm at Books-A-Million, they have Bongo print comics with the magazines. They are separate from the direct market stuff, but they do have them.

My understanding is that DC and Marvel quit publishing newsstand editions, so it's be interesting to see if any comics are still on the magazine racks at Books-A-Million in the future.

Those are the newsstand versions of the Bongos that still come out usually 2 weeks after the direct market versions ship to the comic shops. I still collect those when I go to Barnes & Noble to be a completist for the newsstand versions. Smiley Since they order so much of each issue, it's easier to get mint copies of them than the direct versions from my comic shop who orders 3 or 4 copies if lucky.

So far my B&N comic section has stuff like Titan comics for Doctor Who, the Archie Comics line, and a line of comics from a company called Alterna. I never see them at my comic shop but Alterna is sold through there taking up the Marvel space. No more DC/Marvel comics anymore like they had before. I guess until they change their mind again. But their graphic novel trades are everywhere there.

Yeah, I see those too. Newsstand sales were so low that I'm betting they had high return rates. I thought you said Bongo had quit publishing print comics.

Re: Bongo Comics (12th Feb 18 at 3:55pm UTC)
They cancelled 6 of their long running titles after Bill Morrison left and they turned the main Simpsons title into a bi-monthly and then quarterly. Any new material would go straight to digital for $1.99 during the passed year. Now they're taking digital only Krusty to print after a year. I think it might have to do with this year being the 25 anniversary of Bongo publishing and this is what they're putting out there for the hell of it.

Spongebob has been the main thing they publish now on a monthly basis. It's weird how Spongebob took over the publishing output of their own company.

It may just be that they ran out of ideas.
