Repost from the old board...

Borrowed from Steve Gerbers site in memory of his past work...

The Unpublished Sludge
In 1995, Malibu Comics' Ultraverse line was acquired by Marvel, after which the comics and their characters suffered a fate worse than Duckworld's. (Are we beginning to discern a pattern here?) Prior to that, editor Chris Ulm and I had decided it would be best to cancel the ongoing Sludge title and continue the character's appearances in a series of specials.

The first of those specials was Sludge: Red Christmas, illustrated by Mike Ploog.

The second was entitled Swamp of Souls. It was never completed. The script for the last ten pages contains complete scene descriptions, but no dialogue. To the best of my recollection, most of the story was never drawn. It was certainly never published.

"Swamp of Souls" is a sequel of sorts to an earlier Sludge tale in which the aphasic murk monster of the metropolitan sewers battled a considerably more articulate alligator named Veffer Voon Iyax. In this story, Veff's brother comes looking for revenge. Sludge is shanghaied into another dimension and becomes entangled in the political machinations of perhaps the most bizarre culture I've ever invented.

Evidently I have 3 of these, but only one has all the accessories (poster/card/temporary tattoo).

The site is down which is beyond my control. {Unsure}
This is one reason you aren't seeing more checklist updates to any of my pages.

Ultraverse Checklist (31st Dec 15 at 3:56pm UTC)
The Ultraverse Checklist has been offline for awhile.
Evidently there was room at the host where my Continuity site is hosted.

Someone was looking for it last week, so here it is again.

This is not a comic and it should probably go in the section with catalogs and fanzine. Since it has an Ultraverse connection, I'm posting it here.

I posted this on Depluto's blog:

Quote:
Depluto, I encountered this Marvel catalog while sifting through my stuff. I came her to see if you needed scans. If you want better images, you are welcome to use them. You’ll probably need to go to the Photobucket pages and click the download button since they’ve got some funky scripts that try to download the html page instead of the pictures.

If you want the scans, here they are:

Front Cover (Non-Malibu Image):

Back Flip Book Cover (Malibu image):
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c379/Quato2/Marvel/199504bc_Sales_To_Astonish_600px_zpstwixt8xk.jpg

If you don’t have one, it’s basically a Marvel Solicitation catalog for retailers. It was supplied to them in a Marvel Retailer Previews packet. Usually the packets were distributed one per store. I was able to acquire an unopened packet because one small chain sold comics at three locations, but only 2 locations were actually comic book stores. The third was a trophy shop. I’d pay the store $6 for the one that was supposed to go to the trophy shop. That was their cost. They’d order for the trophy shop out of one of their other stores. It was an unusual arrangement.

This is about 51 internal pages soliciting Marvel Comics if you open the front cover. If you flip it over, the other side is dedicated to Malibu. The back cover, the back inside cover, and about 11 pages are sales pitch articles and solicitations for Ultraverse. Another 5 pages following the 11 pages are sales pitches and/or solicitations for Bravura and other Malibu titles.

The images above are 600px tall. I can supply slightly larger scans in the neighborhood of 800px if you want those.

Great collection of Ultraverse data here. You did good.

Updated the checklist to Version 2.15 and added Sales to Astonish retailer catalog.
http://comicchecklist.hol.es/Ultraverse/Ultraverse_Checklist.html

Made a simple page for it:
http://comicchecklist.hol.es/Ultraverse/Promo/Malibu_Flipbook_Sales_to_Astonish.html

The color scheme there is a mess! I guess I need to do something like I did on my continuity page.

Re: Ultraverse Checklist (25th Jan 17 at 10:11pm UTC)
I ramble a lot and people disagree with me. It's always amusing to see a creator echo the exact points that I try to convey.

Tom Mason posted this 10 days ago and it's something I've said repeatedly!
Quote:
In Direct Market comics, the customer is really the retailer because if he doesn't order, there's nothing for the reader. A lot of time and money is always spent on retail-awareness. Ulm correctly positioned Malibu to make a direct connection with the fans - that if you wrote in or called or one of us had a good conversation with you at a convention, you were going to be put on the list.

It's 2 points I made about comics:

1) The retailer is the make or break customer for a publisher.
2) Market to the fans so that they tell the retailer what to order. If you don't as a publisher, you are shooting yourself in the foot. If the customer does not tell the retailer to order the books, there is a high likelihood that the retailer assumes no one wants the comic and they won't order it.

Words from Big Tel posted on 6/9/2017

Quote:
I used to have my own website titled "Big Tel's Web Page" many years ago. Yes - very silly website name! I used the site to list Marvel and Malibu variant covers and promotional/giveaway comics.
After putting a lot of effort into it over a few years, work commitment and kids started taking over and I just didn't get the time to keep it updated. Eventually the site that was hosting it closed down, and I even lost my domain name (www.big-tel.com) because I never got round to renewing it.
I still have all the files for the site though, and if I can ever be bothered, I may upload them all and get the site running again.
Cheers

More from Big Tel...

Quote:
I used to buy every single comic that Marvel published, from Barbie to the X-Men, and not one from any other publisher unless it was a Marvel crossover. It was when Marvel bought out Malibu and started the Ultraverse crossovers that I decided to collect all Malibu back issues from the start. After reading all the titles I soon realised that Marvel had destroyed them, which was a shame.

I eventually stopped buying comics in 2005 because, a) it was costing me a fortune every week, and b) I got very disillusioned by Marvel for ripping us off with multiple variants of the same issues, expensive "deluxe" editions, throwing away years of history and tradition with unnecessary reboots and generally producing rubbish storylines with some terrible writers and awful artists.

I haven't bought a single comic since 2005, although I've still got my collection and I've just restarted checking through them again.
