Re: Silicon Valley (HBO) (4th May 16 at 1:16am UTC)
Yea this episode felt long to sit through. And it had too much horse. I get the shock of the horse gag but it was too in your face and felt like they were stretching the scene.

I thought the new lead actor from "Groundhog Day" would have added more comedy but he just seems like a bland addition to the cast.

I was wondering if there was a writer's strike. This season is being so so. I liked the jello in the watermelon shell at the end though.

The episode was such a downer that I'd completely forgotten the horse.
I had to google it.

http://www.vulture.com/2016/04/silicon-valley-horse-sex-scene.html

Quote:
How Silicon Valley’s Horse-Sex Scene Came Together
By Lisa Liebman

Silicon Valley loves its dick jokes. One of the show’s most memorable: Pied Piper engineers trying to mathematically work out the “optimal tip-to-tip efficiency” of a guy jerking off an entire Tech Crunch audience in the season-one finale. In its own way, this week’s sight gag is just as impressive: After Richard tracks down new CEO Jack Barker at a stud farm because his “number-one breeding mare” is in heat, he’s treated to an eyeful of stallion-sized schlong followed by thoroughbreds screwing. Silicon co-creator and executive producer Mike Judge, who directed “Two in the Box,” says the episode’s epic boner joke wasn’t about upping the ante: The writers simply wanted something going on behind Richard and Jack while the newly demoted CTO complained about how his compression algorithm was being used. “One of our consultants told us about a guy who had made many, many millions, and blew it on horses, wine, and vintage cars,” Judge says. After trying and tossing a vintage-car scene, it was off to the races when executive producer Alec Berg suggested horses humping. Here, Judge reveals the ins and outs of shooting what he thinks is TV’s first equine-sex scene.

The writers educated themselves on the process with YouTube videos, and there was no casting call for a well-endowed stallion.
“I wasn’t too concerned about what the horses looked like,” Judge says about the plan to shoot real thoroughbreds in flagrante. “As long as we could get horses doing that; the whole thing is just so over the top.” After a horse consultant was hired, the writers learned the act is called “natural cover" (thoroughbreds must reproduce by natural, biological means), which Jack marvels at. Despite the show stud’s natural gifts, Judge says in real life, his semen wouldn't be worth the $150,000 Jack paid.

The first time they tried to shoot the scene, the crew nearly got swept up in an FBI raid.
The original shoot had to be scrapped when the stud farm turned out to be a front for an illegal pot operation. “One of our camera guys would have been arrested if he’d gotten there, like, 15 minutes earlier,” Judge says. New stables in Temecula, California, were found, and those are real wranglers in the scene keeping the mare safe. “The horses go at it so hard, the handlers have to keep the stallion from slamming the mare into a wall or something,” he says.

Judge extended the length … of the scene.
Turns out horses get it on pretty quickly. To make the sex last as long as Richard and Jack’s conversation, Judge used a split screen, combining the tech execs going at it with the horses doing the same.

Thomas Middleditch improvised Richard’s penis-envy line.
Why is Richard so utterly uncomfortable with horses having sex? “He had something important to talk about, and just didn’t want to look at this giant horse penis,” Judge says. “So Thomas threw in that line: ‘You know this is just hard for me.’”

This isn’t necessarily Judge’s favorite dick joke.
Season two’s gag with Kiko the Nicaraguan monkey using his new bionic arm to masturbate (and throw his feces) is right up there.

Will there be more dick jokes this season?
Yes, but they’ll be of the human variety. “There are some romances,” Judge hints, so “some of the guys will be getting some action.” He says to expect “one or two small dick jokes — not size-wise — probably not as graphic as the horses.”

The scene was okay, but the conversation moving the story forward was just annoying. It doesn't help that Richard is so timid when bringing his points forward. It is also annoying that everyone is trying to steal their technology and they are essentially giving it away through stupidity. I think Mike Judge is a genius, I just think his brilliant ideas are spaced too far apart and he milks the ideas he has too much. So it appears that Judge did prolong the horse scene. He should have had more going on if he wanted to prolong the scene.

The making of article was a more entertaining read than episode two. Sounds like they really went far for that gag.

Looks like the show was renewed for a fourth season. Maybe it's getting the worst ones out of the way. Usually in a season, a third of the episodes are really good....a third are ok fillers...and a third of the episodes are shitty. I think I heard that in a podcast.

It looks like he directed episode two. {Unsure}

Finally found the song to the intro credits of the series:

It's not the directing that bothered me. It's the overall plot. The plot is a downer. It sucks all the life out of the humor.
The song is not my kind of music. It makes me wonder if someone knew the musicians and decided to help give their career a bump.

This was an improvement over the previous 2 bad ones. I liked the beginning where they were showing them where their box would be in that infinite looking warehouse. Seemed like an homage bit to the end scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark with that warehouse full of boxes for the ark to get lost in.

I see Monica returns to explain business things to Richard... {Rolleyes}

The Dinnish gold chain gags were kind of funny. The last gold chain jab made me laugh.

For most of the episode, they were being proactive and intelligent. The data center reminded me of Costco in Idiocracy a little bit. I thought the desk was funny. It wasn't a gut busting funny episode, but it was upbeat until the end. They need to come up with better cliffhanger endings.

Episode 4 was meh. Not as bad a downer as the others. Hopefully with this 4 episode arc and one of the characters out of the way, it'll somehow improve.

I missed it Sunday night. Our computer system is down at work Friday due to a global system upgrade in the background. I've talked my boss into letting me take off that day and work 4 ten hour days Monday through Thursday to get my hours in. For that reason, I simply haven't been home and awake long enough to catch the latest episode. I should be able to watch it this weekend.

I finally saw the episode. I liked it much better. Big head keeps doing nothing and getting wealthier. I like seeing Richard cuss out the product designer. I'm glad the CEO is gone. The way the show has been written so far, he'll probably sue and show back up.

On a positive note, they can't write bad code and they keep surpassing their own expectations.

I liked the part when the spiritual advisor calls him after his parking space was moved....and when he sees him about to pick answer the phone, Gavin looks at his phone to see who it is and then he declines his call.

The show is getting predictable. I knew exactly what Richard was doing when he vented. Just factor that he's going to do something unimaginably stupid and it plays out. Overall, I'm just disappointed that they are making every episode a downer for one reason or another.

I think they are just trying to give it a cliffhanger ending. They need to read Jim Shooter's blog where he tells about different ways to do continuing stories. Curb Your Enthusiasm ended with "Oooops!" moments a lot.

Re: Silicon Valley (HBO) (4th Jun 16 at 1:03am UTC)
The horse scene worked for me because you expect it to end and they don't. It's like the jokes that don't have a punch line. The reaction people have is funnier than the punch line. Miller's serious tone is what makes his sarcastic delivery funny. The sarcastic way he says "Liking Ike" cracked me up more than some of the other lines. I saw that this bit was added as new on Comcast's "On demand" feature and then I stumbled across the video being mentioned in an article. I figured it was worthy of being posted. I can't imagine what it'd be like being the actor in that scene having to listen to it all. I can't tell if he's having to force those reactions he gives. At no point is he portrayed as being upset by the insults.

That was funny. There were several funny scenes scattered throughout and they weren't rehashing the exact same jokes they'd used before. I liked when Jian Yang told Richard he could keep living there for a year even if he was kicked out. I liked when Bachman said it would take a long time to forgive Richard and he'd already done it within 24 hours. It's derivative of stuff Mike Judge has done before for a laugh, but it was unexpected and timed perfectly in context.

I swiped those from the website, but I didn't do a good job eliminating white pixels around their heads when I made the background transparent. It was a rush effort.

I'd rather see another Beavis & Butthead comic. Maybe Papercutz could license that and hire Rick Parker to draw some more. It's gotta be better than their blasphemous use of the Tales From the Crypt licensing effort. Rick will sometimes chime in about Jim Shooter. I guess they worked together at Marvel. Rick made a comment online that he'd wished some of the artists royalties at Marvel had extended to colorists and letterers stating that they are artists too.

Some of the funnier moments were Monica's new desk location, the orange Ferrari investor guy and "Donald Duck."

The whole face chat compression thing seems to be the main running storyline for season. It felt like a short episode this time. Jian Yang returns! Where was his prank calls from the kitchen?

I like how Big Head confused "Occulus" with "Octopus" from Jian Yang and then Elrich getting frustrated.

Good to see Emily Chang again. I wanted her to have more screen time!

I find the spiritual advisor character annoying whenever he shows up.

I think they ran out of story ideas about a compression algorithm and they are trying to segue to a "new internet".
Emily Chang was the best thing about the episode. I haven't seen her on Bloomberg in awhile. I think she's on maternity leave. I stepped out of the room when the spiritual advisor appeared. I saw his talking a bit, but I could only piece together what it was about. The octopus recipes wasn't that funny to me. Great Conan video. No Gilfoyle on stage? He's an underused character. His dry delivery is excellent.

When i'm in a bad mood or stuck in traffic, Jian Yang prank calls helps. {Grin}

I like his comedic timing at the end with the cigarette.

I did notice the little screen time for Gilfoyle. Maybe since this one focused on Dinesh, Gilfolye will get more attention this season. I like his low key delivery. I get why Mike Judge makes him down play his character now.

I can listen to Emily Chang read anything all day...doesn't matter what. A menu, itunes agreements...whatever she wants...

The "new internet" concept is a little bit like what John McAffee was trying to create.

He's been low key. i haven't heard much from him recently.

Ah! he's pushing a hack proof smart phone. I guess that's a prerequisite to privacy on a new smartphone network.

I think a lot of industry people have given him a gold mine of content. It's just a matter of finding a way to work it into the plot.

Saw the new one a day later. It was okay. Tried to watch it while making dinner. Couldn't do it. It required too much focus. It came across as straight drama again. The funniest part was Dinesh bonding with his date over their dislike for Gilfoyle.

That was funny how Dinessh and the girl started getting along when they mentioned Gilfoyle's online presence. Her reaction in meeting him was funny. They probably play more of Golfoyle's side in next episodes.

Gavin looks like he'll be out of a job for a few episodes and then probably work his way back into Hooli again somehow.

They're going back into Peter Gregory's legacy now too.

I got the free NotHotDog app and tested it while at the supermarket. It worked on 5 different foods.

I scanned a sealed bag of sausage links and it said: "Not Hot Dog."

Thank you, Jian Yang.

Flash seems like the more fun of the 4 DC Shows to watch. But I've never had the chance to watch all of em. Arrow I tried from the beginning then got distracted. I actually put my netflix subscription on pause since I barely even watch it I would spend more time adding shows to my menu queue than actually watching anything. I can't remember when I saw something fully on there. Or the marvel stuff.

I don't think any are great.
If a new character appears and you don't know why they are there, they will probably end up being a villain.
If a side character seems to be showing up too much, they will probably die.
If a character dies, they will probably reappear repeatedly.
Any major emotional conflict could have been avoided completely if the character had not opted to keep it a secret.

On FX, Legion had some really cool scene along the lines of the Philadelphia Experiment movie.

The blood boy transfusion part and how it ended was interesting. I was curious to see if Gavin would have gotten high from the drugs his blood bag boy was ending up using.

Now that Mia's other side has been outed, it would have nice if they keep her in the cast with more of her vs. Goldfoyle banter.

I've been seeing the episodes later on since I was on a Twin Peaks marathon kick.

Re: Silicon Valley (HBO) (26th May 17 at 7:09am UTC)
He was my least favorite character from the beginning. It may go well for him, but I think this is a mistake. It's a big mistake that many actors make. The do well on TV and the audience becomes familiar with them. The movie studios see an actor with a good Q-Score and they start hiring them for movies. The actor's weekly appearance on the the show becomes an ad for whatever movies they are in. The actor then decides they need to move away from their low paid TV show and focus on their high paid movie career. Their rate of pay increases and they are no longer a good value to a movie studio. They want more money and their lack of presence on the weekly TV show means the studio is losing the weekly visibility of the actor and loses that weekly marketing angle he provided. Unless he personally can carry a movie as a lead actor, I think he's priced himself out of a job. In my opinion, he should stay in a TV job and work twice as hard until he can get his own TV show. In reality, I won't miss him.

It's an improvement over season 3. Jared is getting funnier now. Next episode should be entertaining.

Wonder how they are going to wrap up Elrich towards the end. Probably already filmed it since he's declining season 5.

If anything, the show runs to season 7 and they bring him back for a big screen movie like Entourage had.

It looks like they have amped up Jared's lines. If the writers are pissed, the script could kill Mr Bachman off. I can't see Mike Judge doing that. I'm not really up for sincere speculation. The show has had a lot of twists. What I think is odd is that they can discard almost any of the main characters now. They got Gavin out of the picture pretty quickly. They could even spin off Erlich into a separate TV show and give him more creative control. The new company financing Pied Piper could be an ongoing introduction of new characters. I think it's safe to say that Richard will continue having an affair with the guy's wife.

I noticed TJ Miller had an HBO comedy special recently. Maybe he was looking for a higher raise. Seems like the pay for Silicon Valley is way less than what HBO pays the Game of Thrones actors for. Game of Thrones is probably more lucrative worldwide hit for them to pay higher over one of their U.S. comedy series. The next Curb Your Enthusiasm season is probably something they would pay high for too.

Re: Silicon Valley (HBO) (31st May 17 at 2:27am UTC)
I'm sure he wanted more money, especially since Deadpool was such a solid success. If he thinks HBO is going to pay Game of Thrones rates, he's crazy. I'm sure the ratings for Silicon Valley don't even come close to Game of Thrones. This is what happens when TV actors price themselves out of the TV pay rates. They move on to movies and have to personally be a box office draw, or they get pushed aside. He's also getting voiceover work that likely pays better. I'm pretty sure he's the voice on the talking snot blob that walks around in commercials. He's a talented guy, but his voice is annoying after awhile. He doesn't have the jovial appeal of someone like Jack Black and even Jack Black was getting overexposure in movies. For Hollywood to pay top dollar, they want a name and face that's going to guarantee an audience. Sadly, Melissa McCarthy is delivering when many others aren't. I think TJ Miller will have more steady voice work like Gilbert Godfreid or Jason Lee have in the past. I just don't see people rushing to the theaters to see him in a starring role.

Mike Judge should just get Emily Chang as the new landlord for season 5. She already has a good rapport with Mr. Jian Yang. Smiley

The best line from Erlich was:

It would be awesome to have Emily Chang as a regular.

I'll confess. I have no idea what artisinal butter is.
It's not like the marzipan line from Chris Elliot in Cabin Boy. That one made me laugh out loud in the theater, and I was the only person laughing.

Cabin Boy was on a few weeks ago and I was watching a little bit of it. I never saw that entire movie yet. There's this new series called "Schitt's Creek" i've been watching with Chris Elliot in the cast that's pretty funny. And some of the comedy actors from the old SCTV show are on there too.

Re: Silicon Valley (HBO) (1st Jun 17 at 10:15pm UTC)
I walked out of Cabin Boy thinking it wasn't that funny. It was very strange, just not funny. Afterwards, I was telling people about it and I was laughing about what I'd seen as I was telling them. I now think that it was funny, but it was sensory overload at the time. Maybe if I'd had an outline of the plot before watching it, I would have laughed and thought it was clever. Following the plot and being bombarded with the strangeness was just too much to juggle. There were scenes when I thought... "Did I really just see that?" The strangeness just kept coming. The one scene that did make me laugh out loud was Chris Elliot being forced to swab the deck of the pirate ship with his tongue. He licks the deck and comes up smiling and says "Mmmm! Tastes like Marzipan." Marzipan is a sweetened Almond paste. I imagined that the nasty deck of a pirate ship might have a mealy coating of dirt with the consistency Almond paste and I burst out laughing. I'm sure a lot of people don't even know what is. I was probably the only one in the theater who knew what he was talking about. I suspect that it's more popular in France.

I've tried watching Schitt's Creek. I can't watch it. I can't stand looking at Eugene Levy's son. If he wasn't on it, I'd binge watch every episode. It has to be funny with the talent on the show. I just can't stand looking at the one character.
